PALA+ Challenge

There are an estimated ten million obese and overweight American kids who experience the ongoing frustrations associated with excessive weight and often do not know where to turn.  The Center Helping Obesity in Children End Successfully, Inc. (CHOICES), a grassroots organization was formed in April 2002 to join the fight against the deadly epidemic of childhood obesity.  CHOICES aims to spread awareness of this critical issue and significantly reduce the presence of childhood obesity in our local communities.  CHOICES has created programs serving Kennesaw and metro Atlanta GA that focus on fitness activities and healthy weight control for children.

  • Childhood obesity has more than doubled in children and tripled in adolescents in the past 30 years.
  • The percentage of children aged 6–11 years in the United States who were obese increased from 7% in 1980 to nearly 18% in 2010. Similarly, the percentage of adolescents aged 12–19 years who were obese increased from 5% to 18% over the same period.
  • Overweight and obesity are the result of “caloric imbalance”—too few calories expended for the amount of calories consumed—and are affected by various genetic, behavioral, and environmental factors.
